TWO-TIME NBA ALL-STAR AND SANTA MONICA NATIVE PARTNERS WITH NONPROFIT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THROUGH SPORTS AND FINANCIAL LITERACY

Baron Davis and UWish are investing time and resources in a sports academy at Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica.

Santa Monica, Calif., – Baron Davis was once a kid growing up in Santa Monica who loved basketball. Now, the two-time NBA All Star, entrepreneur, and investor is coming back to his roots and investing in kids like him. Davis and his company UWish will partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica to provide two hundred local kids in grades 6 – 8 with a holistic sports academy that blends basketball skills with personal finance and mindfulness education.

The investment from Davis has the potential to double the impact of Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica’s sports programming—increasing access to the transformative power of sports.

“I’m excited about what this program will offer the kids,” said Davis. “This was my first basketball camp – having grown up participating in it myself, playing basketball here as a child, I know firsthand its impact. We’re thrilled to expand the program here in Santa Monica, not just to connect with the youth through sports but also to teach them financial literacy in a modern, engaging way. I founded UWish to create a fun way to teach kids and teens about achieving goals and wishes, while also teaching them about money. It’s a rewards platform dedicated to creating an inclusive learning environment that empowers every child in their financial future.”

During the academy, kids will develop skills to succeed on and off the court, growing as athletes and leaders and learning to plan for secure financial futures. They will learn mindfulness skills, practice basketball drills, and complete a financial literacy curriculum—all while practicing teamwork and building relationships with trusted coach mentors.

“This partnership allows Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica to make an even bigger difference for kids in our community,” said Brynja Seagren, Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica CEO. “Sports can be a pathway toward a brighter future for the kids we serve so we are grateful to Baron Davis and the UWish team for helping us significantly expand access for middle schoolers in our community.”

The program runs from September 24 to November 23 with sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 7 p.m. The cost is $150 for current Club members and $200 for non-members. Financial assistance is available. More details can be found at www.smbgc.org/sports.
