March CEO Update: Elevating Youth Voice in Our Clubs

By March 25, 2025No Comments

At Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica, we’re dedicated to providing impactful programs to kids and teens. One way we make programming the best it can be is by inviting our members to help us shape them. When we listen to kids, we empower them. Their voices help us create safe, engaging spaces where they feel heard, valued, and encouraged to lead.

Why Youth Voice Matters

Feeling heard and valued is a key part of mental health. “Emotional well-being also involves the experience of voice and of one’s ability to act on the world – both individually and collectively,” reports The Readiness Projects.

When kids help shape their experiences, they build deeper senses of belonging, ownership, and safety. By incorporating youth feedback, we ensure our programs are relevant, inclusive, and impactful.

How We Integrate Youth Voice at SMBGC

  • Continuous Dialogue: We regularly ask our members what activities excite them, what support they need, and how we can make their Club experience even better.
  • Annual National Youth Outcomes Initiative Survey: Every year, we facilitate this comprehensive survey developed by Boys & Girls Clubs of America. It allows us to get an overview of Club experience and compare our results to Clubs across the country.
  • Youth Leadership Opportunities: Programs like Keystone Club, Torch Club, and Youth of the Year allow kids and teens to take on leadership roles, advocate for their peers, and drive change in their communities.
  • Family Engagement: We recognize that families are essential partners in youth development. Parent input helps us shape programming that meets the needs of the whole child, specifically in the communities we serve.

Creating a Culture of Belonging & Safety

A culture where kids feel safe sharing their thoughts is one where they thrive. This extends beyond programming—it’s about fostering mental and emotional well-being whenever kids are at the Club. When youth voice is embedded in our Clubs, we see:

  • Stronger peer relationships. Kids feel invested in creating a safe, inclusive community and find a stronger connection to their friends and mentors.
  • Increased confidence. They know their opinions matter and are comfortable stepping outside of their comfort zones to try new activities.
  • A safer environment. Open dialogue creates trust and ensures our Clubs remain inclusive spaces where every child feels at home.

We Can All Incorporate Youth Voice

As we continue to amplify youth voice in our work, we invite you—our families, supporters, and community partners—to be part of this journey! Encourage young people to share their ideas. Support initiatives that empower them. And most importantly, let’s remind every child that their voice matters.

Together, we can ensure that our world continues to create opportunities for the next generation to feel heard. Because when kids feel heard, they thrive.
