Every Friday, at the Jack and Cindy Jones Youth Center at Mar Vista Gardens Boys & Girls Club, a group of eager members descend on the vibrant Butterfly Garden wearing tiny gardening gloves and brimming with enthusiasm.
Through the STEM Mentoring Program, team member Julissa has introduced kids to the fascinating world of butterflies. They learn about the different species that call the garden home, their unique characteristics, and the importance of preserving their habitats.
One of the most popular garden activities is hunting for caterpillar eggs. With keen eyes and gentle hands, the kids search the leaves of plants for the tiny, often camouflaged eggs. They then transfer them to a habitat net, where they watch the transformation from egg to caterpillar, chrysalis, and finally, butterfly.
Beyond tending to the plants, the kids also take pride in keeping their community clean. They take turns picking up litter, weeding the garden, and watering the plants. They learn the importance of caring for their community and the environment.
The garden has become a place where members connect with nature and with each other.
